"The least" and "he most" in this 14th medical team:
- The most team members : there were 32 members, so we were divided into two teams everyday to go to two different villages.
- The least men : there were only 6 men, but 4 of them were doctors and dentists. Therefore the other two had to do all the odd jobs. They still served with willingness, joy and humility.
- The most rest : most of the days we could go to bed at 9:30 p.m. and had enough rest, waking up at 5:30 a.m. the following morning.
- The most harmonious team : since we were divided into two teams, when we met again for dinner, we were so happy to share what had happened that day.
Welcome Party
The brothers and sisters enjoyed performing a traditional
"welcome dance" for the medical team. After that three brothers performed a turban dance, and at the end, they invited three medical team members to come up. Finally, a little 4-year-boy and his mother and one other member performed a beautiful welcome dance. Of course, the little boy got the most applause.
Birthday Party
We had a birthday party on the evening of November 5. Our missionaries Rebecca and Yuko have their birthday on the same day! This was also their first birthday party in Cambodia! It was so special for them. One of the team members made a hat from the balloons for Rebecca and Yuko. Three members gave them their best wishes.
Young People
The young people really have grown a lot. Philemon and Sok Chan talked to me first and I found that their English had improved a lot. There was a young man who could speak some Mandarin. He learned this in Phnom Penh. Many of the young people are very eager to learn and are really very clever. However, there must be a place and a chance for them to learn and perform.
Children
There was a little 4-year-old boy who came with his parents on the team. The people here guessed that he was 10 years old. This was because most of the children here do not have enough to eat and are underweight. Although they are 10 years old, they are small in stature.
There was a 9-year-old boy who came to see the doctor. He was almost the last patient. Two years ago his two eyes got infected and because his parent did not have money to send him to the hospital, his eyes are now blind. Now he cannot see, nor read, nor play with his friends
...... In Cambodia the facilities in the hospitals are not like those in developed countries; and the people are so poor and cannot afford to pay even for a
day's expenses. I am wondering someday will there be a school for the blind? My heart sinks, because now there are so many children cannot go to school, and they
aren't even disabled. Oh, Lord, have mercy on these children, and on Cambodia.
Sharing of the team members:
Three fathers said:
- When I saw the naked, dirty and skinny children running in the street, my heart was broken. I remembered my little boy about the same age in Hong Kong and he was so comfortable. They are all children under the same heaven. How can we help these Cambodian children to live a better life?
- The reason I brought my son (daughter) with me was to let them see how comfortable and blessed they are, hoping that they could have a taste of the less comfortable life in another part of the world, so that they will grow up with more compassionate hearts.
Some members said:
- When I came last year, I was like a stranger and knew nobody and nothing. But this time it was like coming to visit some old friends. There was a kind of warmth in my heart and I knew how and what to talk with them about.
- I enjoyed the fellowship and sharing. And although we were busy, we could still have a fixed time for personal devotion and reflection. It was just like a retreat. One could not have this if they joined a secular tour.
Come and join the 15th medical mission team November 8-18, 2003.
