Missionary TeamRecently, one of my coworkers was infected with Dengue Fever, which may be fatal if it is not treated with care.  In the beginning, she just felt weak without any other symptoms of Dengue Fever.   She even didn't have the strength to cook or travel as usual.  My colleague helped her to cook and did errands for her.  A few days later we took her to a clinic and the doctor thought that she might have Dengue Fever.  We then took her to a local hospital later on the same day.  After she spent 2 days in the hospital, the doctors both at that hospital and in Hong Kong suggested that she go back to Hong Kong for diagnosis and treatment. We then rushed to coordinate with the Hong Kong conference office and to buy the air ticket.  The whole incident brings up my feelings about family.

Sickness and loneliness

I easily associate sickness with family or our close ones in Hong Kong, especially when we all stay at our own apartments alone.  Even though we  appreciate the concern and kindness of the local pastors and members, we need to face the difficulty alone.  Sometimes it is hard to put into words how we are able to pass through these times in helplessness and loneliness.  Without God's grace and protection, we might not be able to endure, not the disease, but the painful process, especially when we don't know how long it will last.

Sickness and support

0607davis1our coworkers seem to be the closest support in the midst of hardship.  Our same or similar cultures can make it easier to understand the needs and wants (food, things to use in hospital) or reactions.  However, if the team members do not get along well, it may cause more conflicts, irritation and inconvenience.  Actually, it is like a family where the members are either closely linked together or loosely connected together.  Thank God that throughout this incident, I could feel that our coworkers are our family members.  Despite the tiredness and inconvenience caused, we are willing to serve each other instead of complaining.  I think this kind of support is one of the core elements to sustain our ministry here.

Sickness and alertness

we are used to working independently in the field according to our duties and gifts.  Sometimes, we are reluctant to get help and add burdens to others.  Nevertheless, sickness alerts us to our limitations and weaknesses.  It is also a good practice of what the Bible says in Psalm 133:1, "How good and pleasant it is when brothers (sisters) live together in unity."  We need each other, not only in working relationships, but also in the fellowship of brotherhood.  Of course, it may take a long time to learn how to 'love' and 'respect'.

What makes us joyful in sickness?
