He said to me, "My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness." I will all the more gladly boast of my weaknesses, that the power of Christ may rest upon me. (II Cor. 12:9)
In early March, I came back from Cambodia with a joyful heart. I was so happy to visit our missionaries there. We had a good time sharing and praying together. We also celebrated the 10th anniversary of the Cambodia Free Methodist Church, as well as the 10th anniversary of the Asia Pacific Free Methodist Missions Association (APFMMA). Cambodia is the first mission field of APFMMA. 15 members from Hong Kong Free Methodist Churches also went to join this happy celebration.
God established the Cambodia Free Methodist Church ten years ago and now there are 5 organized churches and 8 house churches in three provinces. More than 700 members and guests attended the celebration. Ten years ago Daniel Sar was a young boy and now he is a fine young man. Last year he graduated from the Phnom Penh Bible School with excellent grades. Now he is the pastor of our Phnom Penh Church and a very fluent interpreter from Khmer to English.
When I was still in Cambodia my right shoulder hurt a bit. After I came back to Hong Kong my right shoulder hurt so badly that I could not raise it up, nor change clothes, use chopsticks to eat, or use a pen, not to say anything about doing housework. I was a bit frustrated about this. God is so good. My cousin and his wife came from Mainland China to visit us for a week. His wife helped to do all the housework and took care of me. When they left, my right hand was able to move a bit, and after two weeks I can work at the computer again. Praise God for His care - He knows my needs even before I ask.
At the end of March I went to visit the quilt project. Most of the workers are ladies and some of them do not know how to read and write. I go with another church member to hold literacy classes for them. They are very eager to learn, and their goal is to be able to read the newspaper and the bus route maps. I also went with five others to visit a leprosy village and the children's home. It took us a 9-hour night bus ride to the village, and we arrived there around 6 in the morning. To our surprise, some of the villagers were waiting for us. Though they are living in extreme poverty, they are very hospitable. We pray that they can have the richness of the gospel. When we visited the children's home, we were sad to find that the price of rice has risen from 1 RMB (US$0.80) per kg. to 1.5 RMB per kg. The present support is not sufficient. However, we are happy to see the children are growing up, and some have very good grades in their studies. Now we urgently need a dorm parent to give holistic care to these children.
We are preparing for ministries in creative access areas to serve more unreached people. I am very excited about this. I am now getting advice from a lawyer for setting up an NGO.
On Easter Sunday the Hong Kong Free Methodist Church will celebrate her 50th anniversary. We are thankful for the missionaries who came to Hong Kong to share the gospel with us and to edify us. Hong Kong 50 years ago was a mission field receiving missionaries but now is a missionary sending country. Before, the church children were sponsored by overseas Christians, but now about 250 church members are sponsoring 300 children in other countries. Pray that the Hong Kong Free Methodist Church can really live out the theme of the 50th anniversary ¡V Live a holy life, and shine for Jesus.
Our Free Methodist primary school has also celebrated her 20th anniversary. Parents like to send their children to our school, both A.M. and P.M. sessions. But because of the decreasing birth rate, there are less and less students. Some parents do not like their children to study in the P.M. session, and students in the P.M. session are decreasing each year. We do not want to close it. Please pray for the future of the P.M. school and that God will provide a way.
May the hope and joy of our Risen Lord fill your heart, and empower you to live for Him.
Prayer Requests:
- Praise God for His faithfulness, timely provision, constant abiding and peace of heart.
- Pray for the continual maturity of the Cambodian church leaders and members.
- Pray for God's healing of the recent health problem of Rebecca
